Introduction to Canoe two day expedition
Taking the premise of the one day introduction course in and around loch Tay but with the enhanced element of learning the art of Canoe expedition camping. Sleeping on the uninhabited Priory island near Kenmore which is steeped in history, it has been a crannog (500 bc) and more recently a Monastery (16th century). The next morning we shall leave our camp and the loch behind as we travel down the river Tay learning basic white water skills appropriate to the beginner canoeist, finishing in Aberfeldy. The overnight stay will be under canvas, so bring a tent, sleeping bag, stove etc or contact us to use our outfitting service.
Introduction to moving water
Taking the skills from flat water and starting to develop these in a moving water environment. We only use water suitable to all members of the group be it grade one or two, for more grading information please click on this link http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/grades.htm. Through the day we shall look at water movement and how to maximize this, white water safety and equipment, white water fundamentals and action planning for the future. Having previous flat water experience is essential.
White water progression

Tay Descent (4 days)
Day 1: Paddling Loch Tay with the option of Sailing, (wind permitting) down Beautiful Loch Tay Camping on Priory Island near Kenmore. This deserted island hosts history dating back to Queen Sybila in the 11 century and more recently a 16th century derelict enclave.
Day 2: Leaving the Loch behind and starting the venture down the largest volume river in the UK. Great water for practising those river skills interspersed with rapids such as “Chinese Bridge” “Church pool rapid” the “fisherman's rapid” finishing the day above Grandtully rapids, home of the Scottish Canoe Associations (SCA) international slalom site. Camping at the SCA campsite offering a chance for a warm shower and a hot meal in the local restaurant or bar.
Day 3: Putting in below Grandtully rapids (option of the paddle for the brave!) the river meanders through arable land and forest weaving its way downstream, alongside the Ruin of the Cathedral before travelling under the picturesque bridge marking the town of Dunkeld. The vista changes to sand bars and drift wood filling overhanging tree branches before meeting our riverside wild camp.
Day 4: The river winds at a lower pace through a managed landscape before reaching Campsie Linn, and the start of the Stanley rapids. The option to run the rapids is up to you as you can get out above or below. Loading the canoes and then a celebratory warm Stovie and drink to conclude your expedition.

A good friend of Source Paddlesport Bruce Low is about to set off on a huge charity paddle please help if you can:

To go straight to Bruce’s web site click here

WHAT IS IT THAT I WANT TO DO?

Basically I am going to travel the length of The Amazon River, from its source 150 miles from the Pacific Ocean, through the Andean Mountains of Peru, across the South American continent, to the Atlantic Ocean, some 6,800Km or 4,225 Miles later. It will start in September 2008 and take about 6 months to complete.
SIMPLE!!!

WHY AM I DOING THIS?

I have several reasons why I am doing this. The most important are:
I have known many people who have had, and survived cancers of many types, also people who have not survived. Some of these people have been my immediate family, and others friends, some have only been acquaintances, or who I met briefly and then heard later of their situation. All of them have affected me. The biggest was when both my parents had different types of the disease. My father passed on after 4 years of lung cancer. My mother has been in remission from Leukemia for 5 years, and is in great shape. A large part of this has been down to the support she received from CLAN. She now puts that back by being a volunteer for CLAN.
Its now my turn to put something back for all the support my mother got, and with that support CLAN have also supported me, and the rest of our family. CLAN also goes on to support many people directly with counselling and alternative therapies. The knock on affect of this support is also huge. As with my family, the support goes wider than the individual who is being directly helped, through counselling, massage, somewhere to stay, or just by being there to visit and have coffee with someone who has/is going through something similar, and this support is passed down to the people connected to whoever is supported by CLAN.
A very important thing is that CLAN also directly supports the carers of sufferers. They too can go and find aid directly from the charity. You don’t need to have a cancer to be supported.

At the moment I am living in Canada. Therefore it makes sense to also raise money for the Cancer Society Of Canada. After all they do pretty much the same thing for the people over there.

But what is my reason for wanting to travel such a long distance? Well……..

I work in the outdoors. I have always been involved in activities in the outdoors, especially in water.
I first stepped into a kayak in 1980 (I think, it was a long time ago). I have been mucking about in boats, on rivers ever since. I have worked and travelled as raft guide and kayaker in many parts of the world, and I will always be connected to that in one way or another. So, what better way of putting my skills to good use than on the largest river in the world?…….after all how hard can it be!

What am I looking for, from YOU?.......DONATIONS, DONATIONS, DONATIONS

Money……ideally I am looking for as many people to donate as much cash as possible. CLAN needs to rebuid because they are going to build a road over it. The current building was remodelled especially for their use, but because of a new road they HAVE to move, so money that could support people will be spent on a new building. Please help the support to carry on.
There are various ways of donating.
The easiest is to go to CLAN web site.
OR to www.bc.cancer.ca
TO SPONSOR BRUCE CLICK ON THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE
If you see a collecting can, put some cash in it. There special points planned for several areas near you…. just keep your eyes open!
There will also be events happening in Vancouver, Canada (as I am working there until April 2008) and my home in Aberdeen, UK. Then in Calgary, Canada (when I return to work in May 2008)
